A Special Evening with Filmmaker Poet Nic Askew

Filmmaker Nic Askew spent a day at Joseph’s House sharing meals, talking with residents, observing the rhythms of the house before he picked up his camera to begin filming. Only when he had a sense of the place and the people, did he feel comfortable turning his lens towards us. You will immediately feel his slow, deliberate style when you watch the short film he made about us.

Patty first introduced me to Nic’s Soul Biographies website a few years back and I, too, quickly became a fan. His films capture intimate human experiences in a way that raises more questions than it answers.

From the minute I first saw his work, I knew that Joseph’s House was a subject worthy of his attention. But I couldn’t imagine that we would ever make a connection. But eventually we did, and, with the support of one of our donors and Nic’s desire to experiment with a new format that would help non-profit organizations tell their stories, we were able to invite him in for a few days.

The result is On the Edge of Life and Death, which captures the essence of Joseph’s House.

Nic’s films invite reflection and conversation and we’d like you to join us for an evening with Nic at which we will do both. We’ll watch the film about Joseph’s House along with two of his other films, one about the onset of dementia and the other about the death of one’s child. Nic will take us through the making of each film and its relevance to every human life, and will engage in a conversation with Joseph’s House Executive Director Patty Wudel and members of the audience.

The evening will be an opportunity to pause and reflect together on how we might choose to meet some of life’s greatest challenges.
